GCC students present the art of ‘Illusion’ | Lifestyles

BATAVIA – Work by students in the digital arts program at Genesee Community College is featured in a juried exhibition opening today at the Roz Steiner Art Gallery on the Batavia campus, 1 College Rd.

“Illusion” is prepared entirely by GCC students. The show will be on view through May 12.

The exhibition features digital prints on paper and fabric, projections and media displays created by digital art students.

Pieces for the show were selected through a juried, or competitive process. Images and information for the artworks were submitted to and selected by Mary Jo Whitman, education director for the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council.

Whitman has a master of arts degree in critical museum studies from the state University of Buffalo, a bachelor of arts degree in sculpture with a minor in art history from SUNY Brockport. She is also a graduate of GCC with an associate of applied science degree in fine arts.

“I’m thrilled and honored to be jurying the 2022 Digital Art Student Exhibit.” Whitman said, “Over the past several years, I have witnessed so much talent coming from the students at GCC and this year is no exception. With so many impressive submissions, jurying the exhibit was by no means an easy task. The Digital Art and Photography students should be very proud of themselves for their outstanding work this year.”

The community is invited to attend the opening reception, scheduled from 12:30 to 2 p.m. today in the gallery lobby. An awards reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served at both receptions.

Hours for the Roz Steiner Art Gallery are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
